Handyman special--1228 High Street, Alameda, CA
This property somewhere in the "HEART" of Alameda just appeared on Craigslist.
It doesn't look like much on the outside (the house appears to be listing to the left):
So I don't know whether to take "The inside will blow your socks off !" as an exciting promise or a veiled threat.
Does anybody know where this property might be?
Update 8/29/2008: They're not kidding about the inside. *Shudder*. And I would really like to know who was building Victorians in 1921.
Update 9/5/08: The address is now official, as is the price. I like how the seller is dictating the terms: all cash AND the buyer pays all closing costs. $610,000 for what looks like a smallish (1,520-sqft) fixer-upper with no concessions makes you wonder whether Linnard (or the seller) is truly an idiot or merely a complete moron.

There's no address, no price (other than "CHEAP $$"), and there appear to be 3 bedrooms and 4 bedrooms. It also looks nothing like a house built in 1921. Maybe the poster was impaired when they composed that post.HANDYMAN SPECIAL CASH _ CHEAP $$ (alameda) (map)

Did you catch there is another posting above the one you found? It states it's in "Alaneda" and that you need to call Curtis (as opposed to Linnard) plus it has two photos of the inside that are seemingly more random than the ones on the outside!
Oh this guy's a douche. I texted him and asked for the asking price and address. A day later, he texted me back with no answers and to call him. So I call him; no answer. I text him about that, and 12 hours later he calls but I miss it. I call him back and finally get him.
He tells me he's not an agent/realtor but is selling the property for someone. He says it's not listed. He told me the asking price is $600K. When I asked for the address so I could do a drive-by, he said he's not giving out the address because he doesn't want people disturbing the tenants. He explained that instead he's collecting phone numbers so he can tell people about an Open House scheduled for Sept 7.
I told him that I'd like to drive by the property, and that a good way to sell a house is to let people know where the house actually is, and why doesn't he just give me the address to me, a prospective buyer?
And he hung up on me. I call him back; no answer. Call back; no answer. Call back, and he answers and tells me he doesn't what to deal with me and .
Douche.
Oh my. $600k for that? In what universe is that "cheap" for a 1-story wreck?
Don't you want to stop by just to see what's with the mismatch on spec info (his vs. public record)? I think I might just stop by and grill the guy for kicks and giggles...
hi knife catcher, I just got off the phone with "Linnard" or "Curtis" or whatever. I told him I am an active investor and this looks interesting, I also asked him if he has a contract on the property already and he said yes so I said are you a wholesaler and he said yes, I said well then can I see your contract? He said that its none of my business. Whatever he is in contract for with the owner and whatever he is selling it for is none of my concern. He then talked my ear off for the next 15 minutes about he can wait to sell this house and he doesn't have to show me "nuthin". I said when he finally shut up that if he is a wholesaler and he has a contract to assign, won't I need to see it if I am to buy it? He said, "uh, thas not what you wuz acsin' before!" This guy is an a-hole, he has no sense and I feel sorry for the poor owners he is scamming, someone should write them a letter and advise them to get away from him.
Good info, thanks for sharing.
I drove by the property the other day and it looks like a complete wreck from the outside. There's a window missing in the attic space on the left, the paint is peeling, the siding looks like it's rotting away, the "yard" is yellow, mangey and dried up, there's a couple of old beater trucks in the driveway, etc. It's a complete mess from the outside. Maybe at $61,000 (not $610,000) it'd be a good all-cash deal.
There's a gorgeous Victorian in great shape right across the street, too, so the contrast is stark.
Rare situation, they owe very little on this property.
Took no loans or refi since 1989 @ 249k
My guess the property is worth about that much ($250K) *now* given the amount of work it obviously needs. If that.
Went inside it today. Creepy! I'm assuming "Linnard" or "Curtis" is the long bearded guy who looks like Mr. Mountain Man. The whole house plus it's cast of characters inside look like they below in the Ozarks and should be sittin' on the front porch with a shotgun.
But that said, the house is a complete mess. It's huge, and has the all the potential for a restore but not without a lot of work and then some. I can't exactly say if it is indeed 4 bedrooms and how many bathrooms it has. I got too creeped out and left.
Thanks for the report.
To think that Linnard/Curtis is the one who's got the internets and the craigslists.
I met with the owner of this house 2 years ago when she was contemplating selling it, or one of the other two properties she owns on San Jose and Oak. She admits her house is a fixer, with decades of files and junk strewn about (hard to believe she is/was a Mary Kay distributor!)
It's too bad they didn't maintain this house which could have been a wonderful Victorian specimen. This is on Alameda's Historical Study List as an "S" - "A historic resource distinguished by its architectural, historical, or environmental significance, eligible for inclusion in the State Historic Resources Inventory, and of secondary priority for inclusion on the list of Alameda Historical Monuments. Many of these are also eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Others would be eligible if design integrity were restored."
